What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a prescription injectable medication designed to help adults manage chronic weight issues. Developed by Novo Nordisk, it belongs to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class—the same family as semaglutide and liraglutide. Wegovy is unique because it uses a higher dose of semaglutide, which amplifies its weight loss effect compared to treatments made primarily for diabetes.
Approved by the FDA in June 2021, Wegovy marked a pivotal change in how clinicians approach obesity. Unlike older appetite suppressants, it works by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone (GLP-1) that helps regulate hunger and fullness in the brain.
